Around 50-80% of diabetics will develop neuropathy (nerve damage) unless preventative measures are taken. Many people report significant pain associated with diabetic neuropathy. This pain is characterized by symptoms of burning, shooting pains, tingling, numbness, and increased sensitivity with touch.
Eliminating the underlying causes of neuropathy and giving nerves the nutritional support they need to heal are critical steps in pain management. A number of studies have shown that diabetic nerve pain can improve through supplementation with certain vitamins and antioxidants. Additionally, good blood sugar control is essential to allow nerves to repair and prevent further damage – which is promoted with alpha lipoic acid and Vitamin D3 in our formula.
ADVANCED NERVE HEALTH™ provides comprehensive support for your nerves with 4 key ingredients:
1. ALPHA LIPOIC AICD
This powerful antioxidant, when used only at doses of 600mg/day or more, has been shown to be beneficial in diabetic neuropathy. The dose is extremely important – as this is TWICE the amount that is needed for blood sugar lowering. Its primary role is destroying harmful free radicals that destroy body cells, including nerve cells.
Recommended dosage = 600 mg/day
2. VITAMIN B12
Vitamin B12 deficiency is a common cause of nerve damage and its painful symptoms. B12 is an essential vitamin for nervous system function and maintaining the strength of the protective covering (myelin sheath) that surrounds nerve cells. Most people’s diets do not contain sufficient Vitamin B12. Supplementing with B12 can promote healthy kidneys, eyes and blood vessels – all of which can suffer from having high blood sugars.
You are also significantly more likely to have Vitamin B12 deficiency if you are taking Metformin, the most commonly prescribed oral diabetes medication, due to vitamin B12 malabsorption. (link to study here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4880159/).
Methylcobalamin (as used in ADVANCED NERVE HEALTH™) is absorbed and used more efficiently than cyanocobalamin, the more common form of vitamin B12 found in most supplements.
Recommended dosage = 1000 mcg/day
3. VITAMIN D3
Evidence has shown that Vitamin D deficiency itself can be an independent factor in causing pain, let alone make existing pain worse. There is research to support that the lower the Vitamin D level, the higher the intensity of pain. It is difficult to get a meaningful amount of Vitamin D from food. Sunlight is another source of Vitamin D – which, of course, poses its own risks. Supplementation with the active form of Vitamin D, Vitamin D3, is recommended to replenish low levels and provide pain relief through its favorable action on small nerve fibers.
Recommended dosage = 2000 IU/day
4. HORSE CHESTNUT SEED EXTRACT
Healthy leg vein circulation is a vital component to nerve health. Horse Chestnut’s benefits in chronic venous insufficiency are well-documented. Escin, the active component extracted from the herb, promotes blood circulation through the veins and, therefore, can reduce swelling and inflammation of the legs. It is thought to work by improving vein strength and blocking elements that cause vein damage.
Over a dozen clinical studies totaling over 10,000 patients have shown that taking horse chestnut seed extract can reduce symptoms of chronic venous insufficiency – such as pain, tiredness, itching, dry skin, and swelling in the legs. Horse chestnut seed extract even seems to work as well as compression stockings, but is much easier to use!
Recommended dosage = 300 mg/day
